Marists in Davao celebrate Feast of the Holy Name of Mary!

DSC_0202 - Copy“Let them always bear in mind that they belong by a gracious choice to the family of the blessed Virgin Mary, mother of God, from whose name they are called Marists…”(Marist Fathers Cons #228).

Marists in the Philippines gathered together on 14 September in Davao to celebrate the feast of the Holy Name of Mary. Prior to the celebration, a 9-day novena was held to prepare for the fiesta with different Marist themes reflected in each mass. The Marist Family: priests, seminarians, brothers, sisters and lay associates participated. Significant number of children from Balay Pasilungan and Osmena Park attended the gathering also.

On 12 September, Archbishop Romulo Valles, DD, the Archbishop of Davao celebrated mass at Davao City Jail Chapel. He was very happy to be invited to say mass for the Marists and the inmates. He thanked the Marists for the work in the prison ministry and hint that he would be asked again to celebrate mass in the jail.

The theme of this year’s feast is Mary: the Woman of faith. The celebration coincides with the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross.

After the mass, some fun games were initiated as well as a simple entertainment where Marists presented their talents and skills. A lovely dinner ended the celebration.

We thank God and Mary for calling us to be Marists. We are truly blessed, humble, joyful and grateful to be one!

Let us make the whole world Marist! Happy feast day everyone!

Bros. Fernando and Paul return to Rome

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAAfter completing their 2 months Marist Mission Exposure in the Philippines, Bros. Fernando and Paul return to Rome on 10th September 2013.

During these 2 months, they had a chance to experience the life and apostolates of the Marists in Davao and Digos. In Davao, they worked at Balay Pasilungan (a home for street boys); caring for the old and sick at the Missionaries of Charity Centre and in Campus Ministry for Non-sectarian schools by facilitating recollections. In Matti, they  experienced life in the Parish visiting people, assisting in liturgical celebrations as well as living with a Filipino family.

On the 9th September, a simple gathering was held to thank and farewell them before they go back to Rome. They expressed their gratitude to all Marists and Filipinos who welcomed and accepted them with joy. Both of them shared that their time was a happy and grace-filled moments with so much learning and beautiful memories to take. This experience also helped them to strengthen their Marist vocation and inspire them to be missionaries of love and mercy.

We are also thankful for what they are and what they have contributed to the District and to the people they have served. Wish them every blessing as they go back to their formation and theological studies in Rome.

Thank you Bros. Fernando and Paul!

Walk for a Cause for building Matti Church

7864_679822522047805_1979653289_nOn 26th August, Matti District Catholic Center held its 4K Walk for a Cause for the intention of building the Church in Matti, Davao Del Sur. The Marist Fathers, Lay leaders, people from GKK’s and many youth joined the morning walk to show their support for the construction of the Church. The walk ended with a Eucharistic Celebration presided by Fr. Arnold Garferio, SM and concelebrated by 2 Marist priests Fr. Lauro and Fr. Lionel.

The walk drew support also from other Marist groups like the Marist Seminarians; the children and staff of Balay Pasilungan Foundation- a shelter for street boys in Davao; as well as members of the Bridgers (group of former Marist seminarians).

The Walk for a Cause coincided with the celebration of National Heroes day, when Philippines remembered and honored hundreds of heroes who gave their lives for the love of the country. Indeed, the people of Matti in their intention to construct their Church offered their time, sacrifice and showed their outmost love for God and his Church.  They too are indeed modern heroes of today!

Let us continue to support our confreres and the people of Matti on their desire to build their Church.
