Marist Bridgers’ Sports fest a success!

The group of former Marist seminarians spearheaded a Sports fest on 27 January 2013 at Samson College of Davao. The Sports fest is held to raise funds to support the priestly life and ministry of Rev. Arnold Garferio, SM who will be ordained on 2 Feb 2013. This is their gift to Rev. Arnold and a way to be grateful to God for the gift of vocation he has received.

Rev. Arnold is one of the pioneering members of this group before he came back to the Marist Fathers congregation.

Many former Marist seminarians together with their family and friends attended the activity. It was indeed a fun-filled afternoon!

Detainees performed the traditional Ati-atihan dance to commemorate the Feast of Sto. Nino.

The Davao City Jail community celebrated its annual Feast of the Sto. Nino on 20 January 2013. In preparation for the fiesta, a first ever novena masses were celebrated in the Main and Annex jails.

The inmates prepared the liturgy very well. Aside from the celebration of the Eucharist, the inmates also performed the traditional ‘ati-atihan dance’. In spite of the pouring rain, the festive spirit prevailed amongst the inmates and visitors. Yes, the inmates are imprisoned but their talents and gifts are freed and generously shared.

Viva Pit Senor!

Giving hope and life to others!

The Marist community together with other religious congregations and lay people went for a 3rd time to give spiritual and moral support to the victims of Typhoon Pablo in Barangay Andap, New Bataan Compostela Valley. The date 13 January 2013 was significant for it was the 40 days after the typhoon hit the plOLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAace.

Activities such as the Eucharist, praying the Rosary, lighting of Candles, writing of names of the deceased family members in a stone were highlighted to remember and pray for all the victims who perished in the flood. Relief goods were also given to the victims as well food.

The children too had their own activities such as drawing and games. It was good to see the young children beaming with smile and joy while receiving their gifts and prizes.

The Marists are called to be ‘instruments of divine mercy’ and doing things as ‘if hidden and even unknown’ in the world. In such a way, they become effective bearers of life and hope to the world in need of love and care.

We continue to pray and extend our help to the people of Andap!

Fr.Philip Callaghan, SM Formation House finally blessed!

On 14th January 2013, the Marist Fathers Formation House in Bangkal was finally blessed. Doing the blessing was Fr. Pat Devlin, SM, the Philippine District Superior and joining him was the members of the community and the International English Speaking Novitiate community. A simple fellowship meal and drinks were shared by all after the house blessing. While having dinner, the rain poured down as if the new house was blessed for the second time.

The Formation house is named after Fr. Philip Callaghan, SM, an Australian Marist who gave inspiration to many young Marist seminarians as a Marist priest and as Philosophy and English teacher. He was also our District Superior. He died of cancer on 16 June 2005 in the Philippines. His memory and inspiration live on!

(L-R) Paul, Dindo and Xavier.

On December 28, 2012, Dindo Calvo and two others: Paul and Xavier from the Province of Oceania renewed their vows for the second time professing the evangelical counsels of chastity, obedience, and poverty. The day itself was the second day of their retreat, which was held at Society of St. Paul Father’s retreat house.

Their vows were received by their formator and superior; Fr. John Larsen and being witnessed by Fr. Donato Kivi, the main celebrant and by Fr. Larry Duffy, the Vicar General and retreat master.

Approaching New Year, the renewal of vows is like a new year to their religious life, giving them invigoration, recommitting themselves and calling them to be faithful.

We thank God for the gift of vocation He had given to these young Marists. May they continue to be faithful in living out the Marist life!
